WOODHOUSE PLAYERS present
"An Ideal Husband" by Oscar Wilde
Robert Chiltern is that rarest of things, a politician with
principles, whose adoring wife Gertrude loves him precisely for his
high moral standards. But the perfect image masks a guilty secret,
and unscrupulous Laura Cheveley has the evidence. Can Robert keep
the love of his wife and his reputation, or will it all come
crashing down?
Full of wit, wisdom and glamour, "An Ideal Husband" was considered
by Wilde to be his best play. Its themes of the worship of wealth
and standards in political life are as relevant today as when it
was written in 1895. And it gives us one of Wilde's greatest
creations: Lord Arthur Goring, a supremely "trivial" and witty fop
who proves far wiser than the flawed Robert, idealistic Gertrude,
or clever Laura Cheveley.
"One's past is what one is. It is the only way by which people
should be judged."
